SID MEIER'S C.P.U. BACH" FOR THE 3DO" INTERACTIVE MULTIPLAYER" REDEFINES COMPUTER CREATIVITY
HUNT VALLEY, MARYLAND, May 28, 1993-MicroProse Software, Inc.(INASDAQ:MPRS), today announced a breakthrough at the intersection of Computer Science and the Arts. SID MEIER'S C.P.U. BACH, the first MicroProse product for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer will be released this fall.
C.P.U. BACH, a computer program designed by Sid Meier and Jeff Briggs, is the forerunner for a new generation cf entertainment software: it creates music; not merely synthesized sounds of recent vintage, but original music of infinite variety and value.
"Creativity Software"" or 'conscious software', as we like to call it, runs contrary to the music industry's axiom that music could only be composed by the conscious human mind. The debate over whether art can be created by a computer will be rekindled by C.P.U. BACH," said Gerry Blair, Vice President of Marketing for MicroProse. "This product will stretch the potential of the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer to deliver a broader spectrum of entertainment to the home."
The program composes and performs original high-quality music in real time, using mathematical algorithms, inspired by classical composers like Johann Sebastian Bach. C.P.U. BACH will compose an infinite number of classical pieces, each several minutes in length. Users may also interact with the program, controlling tempo, mood, and overall tone, and even instruments, much like an orchestra conductor. In addition, any composition can be saved, allowing the user to assemble a program of 'favorite' pieces.
"It's like having your own personal composer," said Sid Meier, Vice-President and co- founder at MicroProse. Meier is the designer of a variety of critically acclaimed, software classics, including CIVILIZATIONM, the premier strategy game, and F-190, the software industry's premier flight simulator.
Briggs, an accomplished composer and musician himself, said C.P.U. BACH can't be compared to the computer-generated music of several years ago. "As development continued," added Briggs, "we were increasingly surprised and delighted by therichness of the music it created. C.P.U. BACH is something totally new and very different. The music produced is new continuously, interesting, and best of all sounds good - good enough to have the "long hairs" roll over in their graves."
