Disc Archaeology

Findings from a byte-level analysis of the US retail disc image (408,817,664 bytes / 199,168 blocks; 162 filesystem entries).

The publisher's name appears nowhere on the disc

A full-image sweep finds the string "Vivid" zero times anywhere on the disc — the label's name exists only on the packaging. The executable's copyright block instead credits "Virtual Productions", with an unusually stern confidentiality notice for a consumer product: "This material constitutes confidential and proprietary information of Virtual Productions and shall not be used by any Person or for any purpose except as expressly authorized in writing…" — followed by "Portions used with permission from The 3DO Company".

Built on 3DO's licensed video player

That permission line is borne out by the code: the player is the same licensed video-player codebase used by other 3DO video titles, complete with its idiosyncratic disc-locking routines ("Can't open kabonging file", "jamming"/"unjamming" I/O) and references to the player's stock branding screens — 3DO_Studio_Logo.img and 3DO_Studio.anim — neither of which exists on this disc: the studio branding was stripped from the file list but the code that loads it shipped anyway. The code also asks for Menu.img while the disc supplies MENU.IMG, relying on the filesystem's case-tolerance.

Structure notes

Eleven streamed segments ship with menu thumbnails per title, fronted by an intro reel. The content is scene selections from the label's contemporary film catalogue, each stream named for its source film. No content-rating or age-warning text exists anywhere on the disc — any such notice is carried in the video itself or on the packaging.

No text credits

Beyond the Virtual Productions copyright block, no staff names exist as text anywhere on the disc.

Filesystem notes

The root directory copies verify hash-identical. The copies of /System/Drivers, Folios, Programs, Scripts and rom_tags disagree between generations — the common multi-pass mastering artifact, pressed into every disc; not dump damage.

Unallocated space

18,915 blocks (~37 MB, 9% of the disc) belong to no file, in a single run. Every byte was checked: 100% standard iamaduck mastering filler, nothing hidden inside.
