Woody Woodpecker And Friends Volume One
Disc Archaeology
Findings from a byte-level analysis of the US retail disc image (525,209,600 bytes / 256,000 blocks; 150 filesystem entries).
Menus from an unreleased Casper volume
The disc's /Screens folder contains a complete, polished episode-selection menu for a Casper the Friendly Ghost cartoon volume that was never released on 3DO. MCA Universal shipped only the three Woody Woodpecker volumes; no Casper cartoon disc exists — yet Volume One carries:
Casper_Menu.img— a finished menu screen: Casper presenting four episode thumbnails (legible titles include "The Absent Minded Robot" and two giant-themed episodes) around an "ALL FOUR" play-all button, in the same wooden-frame style as the Woody menu.Casper_Menu4.img.old— an earlier revision of the same menu, identical except the "ALL FOUR" button hadn't been added yet — two iterations of an unreleased product's UI, both pressed to retail.Casper_Red_HiLite.cel— the menu's selection-highlight graphic.- The executable itself loads
$boot/Screens/Casper_Menu.imgby name: the shipped player was built to run both titles, and the Casper volume was evidently in production alongside Volume One when the disc was mastered.
Other development leftovers
launchmereferences$boot/Woody_Intro.stream— a file that does not exist on the disc; the intro was cut or renamed after the code was built.- Superseded menu revisions ship alongside the finals:
Woody_Menu1.img.old,Woody_Menu2.img.old,Help.img.old. - Two development utilities sit at the disc root:
memtest(20,384 bytes) andsymanim(43,772 bytes). /vspicsis a folder of leftover test images:TestO.cel,test3.cel,testd.cel(each with a 50%-scale twin) and a stock photo,reef.img.- The player's disc-locking routines are named after Quick Draw McGraw's alter ego:
performElKabong, initElKabong,elKabongRequired— with "jamming" and "unjamming" I/O operations on a "kabonging file".
Structure notes
The four cartoons (Hot Noon, Panhandle Scandal, Pistol Packin' Woodpecker, Short in the Saddle — a western-themed volume) ship as four ~100 MB streams with chapter markers for the rewind/fast-forward controls. The disc uses only two root-directory copies, placed adjacently — minimal redundancy.
No text credits
A full-image sweep finds no staff names, no "Universal", not even "Lantz" as text anywhere on the disc — the only identifying text is in the menu artwork itself.
Unallocated space
51,565 blocks (~101 MB, 20% of the disc) belong to no file, in a single run. Every byte was checked: 100% standard iamaduck mastering filler, nothing hidden inside.
